Indiana has long been a world leader in life sciences and home to such industry giants as Eli Lilly and Company, Biomet, Cook Group, Inc. and Zimmer. Indiana boasts the second largest medical school in the U.S. (Indiana University School of Medicine) and hosts the highly successful incubator, Indiana University's Emerging Technologies Center. This 40,000 square-foot incubator opened in 2003 and houses many biosciences businesses. Underscoring the state's integral role in life sciences nationally, an Indiana physician was recently tapped to chair the board of the American Medical Association.

  • Indiana is one of the nation’s top four life science leaders in terms of the number and concentration of life science jobs (Battelle Memorial Institute, 2006).
  • Indiana gained jobs in life sciences at more than twice the national average 2001-2003, rising 4.5 percent compared with the 2 percent national increase.
  • Indiana ranks eighth in the nation for projected biopharmaceutical job increases from 2004-2014.
  • About 18 percent, or $69 billion, of Indiana’s economic output is tied to the life science industry
  • More than 578,000 Indiana jobs- one in nine of all jobs in the state are directly or indirectly tied to the life sciences and health care industry- Deloitte & Touche, 2005.

Bio International Convention 2008

BioCrossroads was formed to capitalize on Indiana’s strong foundation in the life sciences by attracting new business opportunities, intellectual property and capital to the life sciences industry. BioCrossroads works with corporate, government, economic development and academic leaders to make Indiana a national and international life sciences center.
Indiana Health Industry Forum
The mission of the Indiana Health Industry Forum is to create an environment where Indiana is a premier location for the creation and growth of health industry enterprises.

IU Kelley Healthcare and Life Sciences Initiative
The IU Kelley Healthcare and Life Sciences Initiative's goal is to widen and deepen Kelley's Life Sciences brand, and to make Kelley the place to study and to hire business students for life sciences and healthcare industries. Toward that effort, the IEDC is sponsoring The Indiana LifeSC Collaboration Series which provides a forum for the multifaceted players in healthcare and the life sciences to think strategically about key business issues.
IU Executive Certificate in the Business of Life Sciences

Indiana Genomics Initiative- creates world- class biomedical enterprise built on existing strengths at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Office of Information Technology. The School of Medicine currently holds $130 million in research funding, which include funding for the nations only federally- sponsored gene vector production and research facility.

Novus Sport is collaborating with the American College of Sports Medicine to identify innovation and discovery in its early stages, determine whether that innovation has market potential, and provide the energy and resources necessary to advance such business opportunities.
